My Top 10 Recommendations in 2023
Favourite reading, listening, watching, and activities of the year.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, my dearest readers from all over the world!
I appreciate your subscription to my channel and your unwavering support throughout this year. Following last week's annual review, here are my top 10 recommendations for 2023.
Check out Rick Rubin's Podcast, Tetragrammaton:
Explore the fascinating conversations with creative minds, especially the one with Tyler Cowen and the bonus episode where Rick sits down with Tyler to discuss and play the music that inspires them, covering everything from avant-garde to modern pop. Hearing these two brilliant minds discuss a range of topics is a rewarding experience, and their excellent music taste adds an extra layer of enjoyment!
Additionally, I strongly suggest reading Rick Rubin's book, "The Creative Act: A Way of Being," one of my favourite reads this year. It's filled with practical insights and resonant wisdom that you can apply to enhance your creative process.
Read The Tibetan Book of the Dead:
Having delved deeply into the study of Eastern philosophy and Buddhism this year, I recommend exploring this profound text. It offers valuable insights into the nature of existence, consciousness, and the transition between life and death, enriching your understanding of these intriguing subjects with its timeless wisdom.
Watch The Fall of the House of Usher (TV Mini-Series 2023):
The series seamlessly incorporates elements from Edgar Allan Poe's poetry, novels, and anecdotes from his life, creating a connected narrative that flows smoothly. The scriptwriter's thoughtful approach even brought me to tears. To explore all the chilling Poe references used in the show, you can find more details here.
Influenced by Poe’s works, I once wrote a short story here and featured numerous of his poems on my poetry channel A Paradise of Poems. I just want to say a big thanks to this Gothic mastermind—he's been my endless well of inspiration.
Listen to Einstein On The Beach by Philip Glass:
If you're seeking a transformative musical experience, I recommend delving into Philip Glass's "Einstein on the Beach." This avant-garde masterpiece takes you on a mesmerizing journey through its unique blend of minimalism and intricate structures. The repetitive yet evolving patterns create an immersive soundscape that challenges conventional notions of classical music. Give it a listen, and let the hypnotic rhythms and ethereal melodies transport you to a realm of artistic brilliance. My favourite part is Einstein On The Beach Knee 5.
Try the Ten-Day Vipassana Meditation:
Initially sceptical, I found this ancient practice to be life-changing, guiding me through a journey of self-discovery. The structured daily routine, coupled with intensive meditation sessions, led to a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection and emphasised that true happiness comes from within. Visit the course website and secure your sessions next year.
Take the ride with Bernina Express:
For a travel experience like no other, I highly recommend exploring the Bernina Express on your next journey. This year, I visited 14 countries, and the standout was the breathtaking trip from Switzerland to Italy. From glaciers to palm trees, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers an unmatched journey through Alpine landscapes.
“On the highest railway tracks in Europe and the steepest in the world, the Bernina Express takes its passengers on a unique journey through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges. From Switzerland’s oldest town through wildly romantic gorges, past spectacular man-made structures such as the Landwasser Viaduct, up to the eternal ice of the glaciers and back down to the palm trees in the Italian town of Tirano: no other Alpine crossing is so spectacular. The modern panoramic cars offer first-class travel comfort and make the impressive landscape appear almost within reach.”
Join a CrossFit box:
Since April, I've been consistently training at Bakery CrossFit Box in Lisbon, witnessing significant improvements in both physical strength and mental resilience. Beyond conventional workouts, CrossFit offers a holistic approach that challenges the mind and body, fostering a sense of community and pushing personal limits. With varied workouts and expert coaching, it's an unparalleled choice for those seeking a well-rounded and fulfilling fitness journey. As I journey through Europe, I make sure to include going to a CrossFit box in my itinerary to connect with local people and immerse myself in local cultures.
Travel to Kyoto, Japan:
Immerse yourself in the cultural richness of Kyoto, known for its historic temples, traditional tea houses, and stunning gardens.
Explore William Blake’s works:
William Blake is one of my favourite artists. His visionary art and poetry offer a profound exploration of human imagination, spirituality, and societal critique. Blake's unique blend of mysticism and creativity unveils a rich tapestry of thought-provoking themes. Whether you delve into his illuminated manuscripts, symbolic poetry, or intricate engravings, each piece reveals layers of depth and invites contemplation. Having attended William Blake's exhibition in London back in 2019, the profound impact of his works continues to resonate with me as I constantly find visions from his art and poetry this year. William Blake vs the World by John Higgs is a great starting point if you’d like to know more about this fascinating man.

You are living the life! Impressed how the poets come to life in your nomadic journeys!
WOW so many recommendations.
I have a pile of books sitting by bed side table that have not been read (Tsundoku); I read in bed with a book light - I get to page nine then fall asleep LOL.
I tell friends if you can't sleep choose the most boring book and then read in bed, guarantee to fall asleep in not time . Problem solved HAHAHA
The best thing to do, is to make a note of your recommendations in my green notebook then see what happens during the year. I will attempt the art of practicing by not practicing; effortless flow, I think In Chinese it is called the Tao.
have great festive season and thanks again
